A Brief History

The owner of 1A Preservations Wesley started out as an eager young apprentice bricklaying for George Wimpy of the prestigious Wimpy Homes on a y.t.s course, this lasted for 12 months. Wesley then trained to be a professional plasterer along with expert damp and timber treatment courses at Salford and Stockport college, after he successfully left college with all his hardwork and experience, Wesley set up on his own doing general building maintenance this is when he aquired a contract working for Moss Care. He played a significant part of the regeneration programme in Moss Side this included complete refurbisments of homes.

Once the contract was over Wesley decided set up a new company with his vast experience and knowledge and this was the birth of 1A Preservations. The company started off small with Wesley and a family member since then the company has gone from strength to strength. As an ever growing company 1A Preservations has a large fully qualified work force and a perminant office manager.

1A Preservations is now a family run Company, managed by Wesley & Steffanie. As a growing company we endeavor to provide the personal touch on every job and we treat your home as we would like ours to be treated with care and respect. Here at 1A Preservations we aim to provide quality low cost Roofing repairs and Building Maintenance for those on a budget. We do not compromise on quality or workmanship. We aim to give our customers expert advise and the highest quality finish possible! Whatever the budget we always strive to achieve 100% customer satisfaction.

Avoid The Cowboys!

Not all companies offering their services will be as committed to fair trading as we are. The following pointers may help you to identify the ‘rogue traders’.

1. Never ever accept offers to have work carried out by random callers (door knockers). Door-knockers will usually offer to do a small job “I just happened to notice you have a tile missing etc.” but will often wreck a roof before you know it and demand exorbitant sums to repair it - badly. Avoid them at all cost!

2. Never be persuaded to let someone start work immediately (if they have no scheduled work to do and are able to start immediately there will be a reason for that!). Their main objective is to prevent you from receiving written quotations from reputable firms.

3. Insist on having a detailed written quotation for all work, large or small, and take some time to consider it before committing yourself.

4. Ignore offers of large discounts (20%, 30% - sometimes as much as 80 % !), they usually mean that the work was overpriced in the first place - and until the person offering it saw the horror in your eyes at the first figure they mentioned that’s what they would have made you pay! We offer an OAP Discount of 5% as a gesture to our senior citizen customers.

5. Never be induced to accept a quotation there and then - this is another means of preventing you comparing quotations.

6. Ask whether sub-contractors will be used - remember that a ‘subbie’ will be working to a price (a lot less than you will be paying) and will want to be away to the next job as quickly as possible!

7. Ask for references & about qualifications - a recent survey showed that up to 80% of Companies undertaking building works employ completely unqualified staff !.

8. Ask for details of Liabilty Insurance - your own home insurance may not cover you for damage or injury caused by a contractor working on your property.

Here’s some examples of the kind of bodged work you need to avoid - the ‘firm’ who knocked on the old ladys’ house where this was done said that they had years of experience! We had to strip the entire installation and do it again.

Code of Practice

At 1A Preservations, we aim to please, we will give you, our customer as much information as possible about the building process due to commence. We work to a strict code of practice and follow the Federation of Master Builder’s guidelines, as we hold a full membership.

Before Work Begins

We will try to make sure that you have all the professional advice you need on the project. We will never quote on a project for which we have insufficient time or unsuited to undertake. We will make sure we have sufficient insurance cover for the contract, this can be viewed on request. Our written quotation will state the following:

A) The price.

B) What is and isn’t included in the price.

C) A detailed description of all products and materials used.

Whilst Work Is In Progress

We will proceed with the work according to the agreement, we will brief you regularly on progress. If there are any unavoidable delays or problems we will inform you of these as early as possible. We can supply you with samples of all materials and fittings for prior approval, at your request. If there are any changes to the work specified or extra costs, these will be confirmed in writing, and agreed with you before work commences. We will, at all times treat you and your property with respect and ensure that the building site remains a safe and healthy environment

*we will accept a verbal agreement whilst work is in progress to ensure that the job will continue to run as smoothly as possible. All our staff are trained in First Aid.

When The Job Is Complete

We will leave the site clean and tidy and ready for use. Any relevant operating instructions or guarantees will be handed over to you. You will be properly briefed about any relevant maintenance or operating issues. A date will be arranged for us to return and deal with any defects which may have arisen during the first few months.
